KANG
DEPARTMENT
CERAMICS
I define art as making something that I want to make without compromising any of that commitment with the “I” being my self identity rather than my social identity, and I call this spirit of an artist. I believe that form and the spirit are the fundamentals of fine art, and they are the only thing that I must have to be considered as a fine art. Content, meaning, process becomes something extra, or in many cases contamination and distraction in my art philosophy.
TOUCH IT TILL I LIKE IT
I do not want to be a tool or a machine that makes someone else’s artwork; I get this feeling when I pretend to be greater than who I really am or by making something that goes against my inner urges. I want to be myself, and I want to make my artwork. I do this by just touching the clay till it becomes awesome to my standards; I cut, pinch, add, scratch, tear, twist, pound, smash, smear, or I poke. Then I glaze and fire it till I like it. In this way of making art, it becomes my artwork, and it reflects my individuality and its uniqueness the most. Although art is subjective and there is no right or wrong, there is right or wrong in my artwork; that is, if I like it then it is right, and if I do not like it, then it is wrong.
AS IT IS, IT WILL GROW
I want to present and share my artwork as it is; by not compromising what I want to make and making it with my truthful passion that is driven by my happiness. It is straightforward; yet cozy and humanistic, and because of this, my artwork grows on people.
